The local community in Tobermory has been granted powers to operate the town's harbour.

The Harbour Empowerment Order will allow Tobermory Harbour Association to manage the facilities on behalf of residents and businesses on Mull.

The not-for-profit community enterprise said it was a "huge step forward" which would benefit harbour users.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said the move would allow the harbour to be managed more effectively.

Mr Yousaf said: "The Scottish government is committed to empowering our island communities and this is a great example of providing greater community control at a local level."

Tobermory Harbour Association chairman Brian Swinbanks said: "The new Harbour Authority will be a community-run and community-driven organisation.

"It will be dedicated to build facilities for all, benefiting local boat owners, fishermen and charter boats, our wonderful island of Mull and the wider west coast of Scotland."

Andy Wells, of Crown Estate Scotland, said it was "a real milestone" for the Tobermory community.
